Cork
oak tree is the only tree to regenerate its bark every 9 to 15 years.
Stripping
the outer bark off the tree must be done with high precision so
as not to offend the base generator which
would affect the tree life longevity as well as its ability to produce
cork.
For
this reason, cork harvest is all done manually by skilled harvesters and
carried
out only from June to August. A cork oak tree can be harvested on
average 10 to
12 times during the life of this tree whose longevity is 120 -250 years. Only after the 30 years of life
of the
tree, the first cork cut is generally undertaken, as the trunk diameter,
at
1meter above earth, is over 70 cm.
The
pieces of bark thus obtained are then dried and aged for years. A
selection of
the best elements is then transformed into very thin sheets of a few
tenths of
millimeter thick. Sorted, pumiced and placed one to one hand, the cork
sheets
will be processed to receive a unique mix of natural emollient. The
whole is
then heated to very high temperature to bind the sheets to each other
through
the suberin they contain. No chemicals additives involved!
The
whole process is manual, entirely made in Europe, from the stripping of
the
bark to the making of the cork fabric. The natural “tissue” so proposed
by CorkCase®
offers a very direct and sensual touch with the matter. That gives you a
good
feeling of softness, comfort and resistance. It is also very light.
Welcome
to the world of cork where each tree has its vital importance. By buying
cork,
you help to protect a tree.
